Which province is Hua Hin in?
Hua Hin is a district (amphoe) of Prachuap Khiri Khan, a long, thin province where Thailand is at its narrowest – only about 12 km from the Gulf to the Myanmar border near Prachuap town. The provincial capital, Prachuap Khiri Khan, is about 90 km further south and has a beautiful bay and an air-force base with monkeys on Khao Chong Krachok hill.
Hua Hin on the map of Thailand
Picture the Gulf of Thailand as a 'U'. Bangkok sits at the top; Pattaya is on the right (east) arm; Hua Hin is on the left (west) arm, about level with Pattaya. That's why a passenger ferry has at times crossed the Gulf directly between the two – see Pattaya to Hua Hin: ferry vs car. Continue south down the west arm and you reach Chumphon and Surat Thani, gateways to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
Getting there
Most visitors fly into Bangkok and drive 3–3.5 hours; trains and buses also run. See how to get from Bangkok to Hua Hin for every option.
