Drive times assume normal traffic. Leaving Bangkok on Friday afternoons or before public holidays can add 1–2 hours.

The usual route: Rama II and Phetkasem Road

Most drivers leave Bangkok on Rama II Road (Highway 35), which runs past Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram to the Wang Manao junction at Pak Tho. From there Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) heads south through Phetchaburi and Cha-am into Hua Hin. It is a wide, mostly four-lane road the whole way.

The alternative is to stay on Phetkasem Road from the western side of Bangkok through Nakhon Pathom and Ratchaburi. It is a little longer but useful when Rama II is jammed with roadworks.

How long does it really take?

  • Weekday mornings and midday: usually about 3 hours from the city.
  • Friday afternoon and evening: 3.5–5 hours leaving Bangkok, as weekenders head to Hua Hin.
  • Sunday afternoon: slow coming back into Bangkok.
  • Long weekends, Songkran and New Year: allow extra time in both directions.

Good stops on the way

With a private car you can break the trip. Popular stops are the Maeklong Railway Market, where a train rolls through the stalls, the hilltop palace of Khao Wang in Phetchaburi, and the seafood restaurants along the coast near Cha-am. Toilet and food stops cost nothing extra.

Distance by train and bus

The railway is about 230 km from Bangkok to Hua Hin and trains usually take 4–5 hours with stops. Buses and minivans follow the same highways as a car but stop more often, so plan on 3.5–4.5 hours. Compare all options in how to get from Bangkok to Hua Hin.
